The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) is a political party in Malawi that has played a significant role in the country’s transition to multiparty democracy. Founded in 1993 by Chakufwa Chihana, AFORD has been a vocal advocate for democracy, social justice and equality.

Chakufwa Chihana was born on July 21, 1939, in Rumphi District. He received his education in Malawi before proceeding to Tanzania for further studies. He became involved in trade unionism at an early age and quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the leading trade unionists in Malawi.

In 1980s Chihana became increasingly vocal in his criticism of the one party state regime of President Hastings Kamuzu Banda. His advocacy for multiparty democracy and human rights made him a target for persecution by the Banda regime.

In the late 19early 1980s and early 1990s, pressure began to build for Malawi to transition to multiparty democracy. Chakufwa Chihana was at the forefront of this movement, advocating for democratic reforms and an end to the one- party state.

On April 7, 1992, Chihana was arrested by the police at his home in Blantyre. He was charged with sedi9tion and detained without trial. Chihana’s arrest sparked widespread condemnation from local and international human rights organizations. Continue Reading....
