THE HISTORY OF AFORD

The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) is a political party in Malawi that has played a significant role in the country’s transition to multiparty democracy. Founded in 1993 by Chakufwa Chihana, AFORD has been a vocal advocate for democracy, social justice and equality.

Chakufwa Chihana was born on July 21, 1939, in Rumphi District. He received his education in Malawi before proceeding to Tanzania for further studies. He became involved in trade unionism at an early age and quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the leading trade unionists in Malawi.

In 1980s Chihana became increasingly vocal in his criticism of the one party state regime of President Hastings Kamuzu Banda. His advocacy for multiparty democracy and human rights made him a target for persecution by the Banda regime.

In the late 19early 1980s and early 1990s, pressure began to build for Malawi to transition to multiparty democracy. Chakufwa Chihana was at the forefront of this movement, advocating for democratic reforms and an end to the one- party state.

On April 7, 1992, Chihana was arrested by the police at his home in Blantyre. He was charged with sedi9tion and detained without trial. Chihana’s arrest sparked widespread condemnation from local and international human rights organizations.

Nevertheless, Chihana’s arrest and detention only strengthened his resolve to fight for democracy and human rights in Malawi. In 1993, he founded Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), which quickly became a major player in Malawi’s emerging multiparty democracy. Aford’s formation was a significant milestone in Malawi’s transition to democracy. The party’s commitment to democratic principles, social justice and equality, resounded with many Malawians who were eager for change.

In 1994, Malawi held its first ever multiparty elections, which marked a significant turning point in country’s history. AFORD performed well in the elections, and Chihana became the country’s first- ever Second Vice President. Since its formation, AFORD has grown into a major political party in Malawi. The party has been a vocal advocate for democratic reforms, social justice and equality.

In 2004, Chakufwa Chihana stepped down as AFORD‘s president paving way for the new generation of leaders. To this effect, Dindi Gowa Nyasulu took over as President of the Alliance for Democracy after Chakufwa Chihana and led the party until his resignation in 2012.

In 2013, Godfrey Shawa was appointed as President by the Party’s Politburo after Nyasulu’s resignation.

Currently the party is led is by Enock Chihana who happens to be the fourth President of the Alliance for Democracy.

The leadership succession in AFORD from Chakufwa Chihana to Dindi Gowa Nyasulu, then Godfrey Shawa and finally Enock Chihana demonstrates a relatively smooth transition of power, which is a hallmark of democratic governance.

The fact that Chihana, the founder was able to pass on the leadership to others without incident suggests that the party has a strong commitment to democratic principles.

Chihana’s legacy in Malawi’s democracy is enduring. He will always be remembered as a Champion of democracy, human rights and social justice. His bravery and perseverance in the face of adversity inspired many Malawians to join the fight for multiparty democracy.

In conclusion

The history of AFORD and Chakufwa Chihana remains the icon of hope beyond proven leadership in the attainment of democracy and importance in the power transition. From a humble beginning to its current status as a major player in Malawian politics, AFORD has remained committed to its core values of democracy, social justice and equality.

As Malawi continues to evolve and grow, AFORD remains a vital force in the country’s politics, advocating for human rights and promoting democratic principles.
