About AFORD

Learn about the Alliance for Democracy — our origins, our values, our leaders, and the principles that guide everything we do.

Who We Are

The Alliance for Democracy

The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) is a democratic political movement founded on the principles of freedom, justice, equality, and good governance. Born from the struggle for multiparty democracy in Malawi, AFORD played a historic role in restoring the people's right to choose their leaders and shape their nation's future.

Today, AFORD remains committed to building a prosperous, united, and inclusive Malawi where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive. We champion accountable leadership, economic empowerment, social justice, youth and women participation, and the protection of human rights. Guided by the values of integrity, patriotism, and service, we work tirelessly to advance the aspirations of Malawians and strengthen democratic governance for generations to come.

AFORD is more than a political party—it is a movement dedicated to empowering citizens, promoting national development, and safeguarding the democratic freedoms won through sacrifice and determination.

Chakufwa Chihana and the Fight for Democratic Freedom

Chakufwa Chihana stands at the heart of AFORD's founding story. His courage helped open the path toward multiparty democracy and gave voice to Malawians demanding justice, dignity, and political freedom.

1992 - 1993

The Birth of a Democratic Movement

AFORD emerged from the struggle against one-party rule under Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda. Led by the late Chakufwa Chihana, the movement championed political freedom, human rights, and multiparty democracy. Following the historic 1993 referendum, AFORD was formally established as a political party and became a leading force in Malawi's democratic transition.

1994

Democracy Restored

In Malawi's first multiparty elections, AFORD contested under Chakufwa Chihana, who secured nearly 19% of the presidential vote and led the party to 36 seats in Parliament. AFORD became one of the three major political forces shaping the country's new democratic era.

1999

Building Strategic Alliances

AFORD entered into a historic alliance with the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in pursuit of national unity and democratic consolidation. The party remained a significant parliamentary force and continued advocating for accountable governance and development.

2000s

Resilience through Change

The decade brought both challenges and transformation. AFORD continued to play an important role in national politics, while founder Chakufwa Chihana served the nation as Second Vice President. Following his passing in 2006, the party remained committed to preserving his democratic legacy and values.

2010s

Renewal and Reorganisation

AFORD underwent a period of renewal, strengthening its structures and maintaining its presence as a respected voice in Malawian politics. Under new leadership, the party continued to champion democracy, social justice, and development, particularly in its traditional Northern Region stronghold.

2020-2024

Reasserting National Relevance

AFORD actively participated in shaping Malawi's political landscape through strategic partnerships and continued advocacy for democratic governance, economic empowerment, and national unity. The party reinforced its commitment to serving Malawians across all regions.

2025-2026

New Chapter of Leadership

AFORD entered a new era of influence as party president Enoch Chihana assumed the office of Second Vice President of Malawi. More than three decades after its founding, AFORD continues to uphold the vision of its founder—building a democratic, prosperous, and united Malawi for all.
